Subject Description

This subject examines the healthcare system's role in contributing to, being affected by, and mitigating climate change. It focuses on sustainable healthcare strategies to address the climate crisis. Key themes include the impact of climate change on patients, practitioners, and healthcare systems, and the importance of systems thinking, good governance, and lifecycle analysis for sustainable practices. Students explore sustainability in community, hospital, and laboratory settings, as well as barriers and facilitators of system change. The subject also links climate action to health equity, highlighting co-benefits for disadvantaged groups and the transition to circular economies in healthcare.

Assignments

Individual Podcast - 20 minutes/1500 words (30%)

Group Presentation - 15 minutes (20%)

Great unit with really well developed module content and practical 4-week intensive. Best if you are working in/have experience of a clinical setting so that you can do the final assessment about your workplace, which is developing a sustainability quality improvement initiative for that setting.
